Form & Function in English language.
Form & Function in English language.
Special Relevance.
The function and form are the motion and core of a social natural phenomenon, communication. Social contexts and the language history predispose the language structure, seen as a valid resource make stight differences are remarkable used in common life. Every domain stage in students give us a standard and non-standard language communications skills, this means that
“Linguists and language specialists don’t actually talk in terms of “good” as opposed “bad” language; there is no such thing” Stacia Levy.
In this way we might assumpt the characteristic of ESL or EFL is an unconventional language chance to adapt learning strategies for students so they can express, understand and produce a well-known academic language. As teachers of an ESL class, we must know that “grammar is about how we combine words to make meaning”
So Describing an ESL class is alike to American Culture classes where native speakers need to read passages about several topics “movies and tv, food, holidays, politics, etcetera” They actually create misconceptions on grammar by the way they speak, for example:
“Double negative, using two negative forms in the same verb phrase, follow their own internal logic and structure. For example, a line from a recent popular song, “I ain’t never coming back to you,” emphasizes through the double negative the speaker’s certainty in his intention of not returning, and actually the “double negative” is standard to show emphasis in some languages like French and Russian.” Stacia Levy.
Teaching topic explaining form and function.
Design a zoo. Challenge your students to design their own display of zoo animals . Students should work in groups of five, they can create a poster sized map of their zoo. When they create their zoo, students can discuss which animals to include.
Habitats
Students have to find common phrases or warnings in zoos.
Students should compare each other researched phrases, in order to use the correct one.
Demonstration.
When students choose correct phrases as a group, they should demonstrate in front of the class, and display their posters in the classroom.
This allow them to order, forms and functions of language of a public place, a zoo.
Trail Blaizing.
As cities grow, buildings are replacing natural forests, people drive to specific location where they can find natural in all its splendor.
Teacher ask students to research about state parks and natural forests in Stateparks.com
Have pair of students click on one state of USA or one they might like to visit and choose a park
Have the pair of students research the park or forest and create a brochure for visitors.
The brochure will include information the visitors might want to know before visiting
Display the brochure in a bulletin board in the classroom.
These two activities improve the use of form and function in language in a fun way, to communicate and have fun with grammar it's essentially important, actually when teachers face ESL o EFL class to contextualize and prepare interesting materials will lead you to success activities.
